Branding includes all of the elements that give your blog a consistent ‘feeling’. This includes (but not limited to) blog design, colours, fonts, images, content, character, niche, tone of voice, social media representation, and even your daily interactions with followers.
Branding your blog is incredibly important to help carry your message and elevate your blog recognition value in a very busy blogging world.
Businesses can spend millions on resources just to create a strong, identifiable brand. But as a lone wolf blogger you can adopt a few techniques to nail down your brand and begin establishing a presence in the online world.
With blogging I believe that slow and steady wins the race. Once you understand what your blog is you can successfully communicate that with potential readers.
Quick Branding Exercise
- Identify 3 to 5 blogs that you consider have a strong brand (or values) that you enjoy/identify with.
What elements do you enjoy the most about them?
- Now look back at the niche exercise and focus on the most common themes, words, feelings that you think will be represent your blog brand.
You want around 3 to 5 words that you will use to describe you, your blog and how you want readers to feel about your brand. These form your ‘brand values’.
- Finally, brainstorm brand elements that match these brand values. Think about colours, images and fonts that reflect your chosen brand words.
Branding is as much about tone of voice as it is visual elements. Think about key words and a writing style that matches your brand values.
