What inspired you to start blogging?

I started blogging as an outlet for my creativity as my day job at the time didn’t enable me to do this. I’d just begun dabbling with textile design again (I studied fashion and textiles at college but working in the city had taken over) and shared my designs and other craft projects I was working on. My blog really helped to spur me on and finally leave my job to work full time on my textile design business at the end of last year.

Do you have any other ‘day’ jobs?

I’ve been self employed since the start of this year and my principle ‘job’ is textile designer. My blog sits alongside this though and I do spend a lot of my time working on it. I’ve recently merged my blog and website into one so it is really part of my job, as well as being something I enjoy doing!

What are your must-have blogging tools or resources?

I get a lot of inspiration for posts (and subsequent feedback and support) from Twitter. I really like to get out and about and do things though, so I’ll often write about exhibitions I’ve visited, things I’ve seem that’ve inspired me.
I manage my blog using an editorial calendar and plan 6-8 weeks in advance. I often have to shuffle things around at the last minute but this works quite well for me. The main problem I have is too many ideas!

What inspires you?

It sounds like a cliche but, everything! I think that the subjects I blog about fit together pretty well despite this! Inspiration is actually a key word which runs through my blog – my work and inspirations, exhibitions I’ve visited, inspiring imagery and the work of others. A lot of my readers are other creatives so I want to inspire them as well as share what’s inspiring me.

What is your biggest challenge as a blogger?

I used to say building an audience, but this seems to be happening all by itself all of a sudden. I’ve been blogging for nearly 3 years and nearly 50% of my views have been in the past six months. This may be because I’m spending more time creating content and consistently blog three times a week.

Now, I think the biggest challenge is continuing to create content that people want to read – I feel more pressure to do this now that people advertise on my blog.

What are your future plans for the blogosphere?

I’d like to continue to grow my blog alongside my textile design business. I’d like to be able to earn a little more from it to support my other work. I don’t expect it to become huge though!

Finally, tell us a random fact about you.

I’m becoming rather keen on gardening (middle age beckons!!).

Thanks for joining us for Shout Out Sunday!

See you again next week for more blogger awesomeness.
